Everything has a story, and if one looks or listens carefully enough, everything tells a story. Whether a gnarled old tree lost deep in an arcane forest, a mysterious stone scrawled with enigmatic runes or the lines that crease a wise old woman’s face, there is a narrative hidden in all things. It is in this way that The Home of the Headhunter came about during the summer of 2018, when artist Michael Koehler reached out to composer Christian Kriegeskotte with an interesting proposal, to create a soundtrack album that would serve to accompany the viewer on a journey through the strange universe of his artwork. Koehler was inspired with the concept after hearing one of Kriegeskotte’s recent works (the titular cut from his 2014 album Cave Music, Vol. 1). Koehler recalled being stricken by the manner in which Kriegeskotte’s words and music seemed to paint a picture that built its own strange universe in the imagination of the listener, even beyond what was being heard or what the composer may have intended.

Indeed, Koehler’s strange worlds share this quality. They are elaborate and thoughtfully constructed, and extend in detail far beyond what is seen on the canvas. His curious creatures and weird rituals take up residence and live on in the viewer’s mind long after the image has been inspected. The Home of the Headhunter is a synthesis of these characteristics and the compatibility between Koehler’s art and Kriegeskotte’s music. While an image remains static, the infusion of music creates depth by adding dimensions of time and texture. Ultimately a new, dark cosmos is born that is neither fully sight nor sound, but a manifestation of the weird aether that flows through the space between them. This prima materia coalesces into a reimagining of Koehler’s image in sound, which unfolds across eight sections each representing a different layer of the giant’s head. As indicated by the title, this giant, disembodied head is inhabited by the mysterious Headhunter creatures who remain actively engaged in peculiar customs and rituals. The musical journey starts at the crown with the lighting of the Sacred Emerald Fire and descends through the depths of Koehler’s weird world where we encounter labyrinths of cones, dark springs and the Great Fungal Weevil before we are finally transported into the Void.
